Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.

City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for information.

A high-ranking official said the incident made him without words and needed to be solved quickly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
