British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
