Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
