Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
