The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
